What Happened to CompUSA
I remember when CompUSA opened their first New Jersey location. I entered the store with great excitement and fear. I wondered at the time what computer superstores would do to the business computer services market.
At the time I had a two person company that supplied the same products and services as CompUSA. We felt threatened by CompUSA, especially as they expanded their service offerings. As the years went by other super-stores ventured into the computer services market, but not with a great deal of success. As you read below, it turns out that local companies like SWK have the advantage in offering computer services.
CRN, Computer Reseller News, reports:
"There is a reason CompUSA closed up shop. Retail can't do computer services. At least not profitably or professionally. Retailers simply aren't willing to invest in the people and processes to do it right. The CompUSA closing is the first shoe to drop in the retailer computer services wipe out of 2008."
Of course there were other reasons that CompUSA was forced to close. Like the lack of credible or useful customer service. I recall my wife telling me of an employee her company she let go. The former employee had no social grace, terrible communication skills and a poor overall attitude. We were shocked to learn that she got a job at CompUSA as a customer service rep.
CRN observes, "Retailers like Best Buy with Geek Squad, Circuit City with FireDog, and even Staples, offering computer services have run aground. Consumers, small office/home office (SOHO) and even businesses are finally hip to the computer retail services boondoggle and are turning to solution providers (Check out the complaint sites on the web)."
